What involvement does Washington State PTA (WSPTA) have in legislative activities? |
|
The vision of Washington State PTA is “To be advocates for ALL kids and ALL families.”
Its Mission: To promote the welfare of children and youth in Washington State leading to success for every child.
This mission will be accomplished by:
· Speaking on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children · Supporting parents* in developing skills to raise, protect and advocate for their children Encouraging parent* and community involvement
*Parent may include adults who play an important role in a child’s family life since other adults (grandparents, aunts, uncles and guardians) may carry the primary responsibility for a child’s health, welfare, education and safety.
Each year in October, WSPTA holds a legislative assembly where representatives of local PTAs and councils attend. The attendees prioritize the top issues that the State PTA will focus on and lobby for during the Legislative Session in Olympia.
As a PTA member, you may note your priorities to Clyde Hill’s legislative reps by completing a 2007-2008 Legislative Issues Survey. For a copy of this survey, please contact Deanna Johnson (deannajohnson@comcast.net) or Chris Lang (langchris@msn.com).

Top Five Priority Issues for Legislative Advocacy
Each year the WSPTA holds a legislative assembly to determine the top five issues they will focus on throughout the year. Below are the top five issues selected by the Washington State PTA Legislative Assembly on October 5-6 (in order of priority) are:
1. K-12 Education Funding 2. Math and Science Education 3. Quality Teaching 4. Student Support Services 5. Special Education Funding
The State PTA will focus its resources and energy on these top five priority issues during the coming legislative session. There are a total of 27 issues on the State PTA’s legislative platform, including these top five issues. To view the entire lists please visit the following site: http://wastatepta.org/leg/VotingResultsLegAssembly07.pdf
Developing a prioritized platform is just one step in our advocacy process. Now, PTA members begin the work of talking with legislators and public policy makers to bring about positive changes. Success depends directly on the involvement and effort of our members. PTA needs your help. Legislators need to hear from their constituents (YOU). In addition, local officials must have input from parents if children are to have a voice when important decisions affecting them are made.
Members are encouraged to keep up to date with the latest legislative happenings by visiting the WSPTA website’s legislation page and signing up for PTA e-mail Action Alerts. |
