Young Scientist Week

You’ve heard it mentioned at assemblies, you’ve read it’s coming in the newsletter, but what is Young Scientist Week? Clyde Hill Elementary's First Annual Young Scientist Week, January 26-30, 2009, will be much more than a science fair. It is a week-long celebration of the scientist in every child! The Clyde Hill PTSA is working to fund, develop, and staff the activities leading up to and during this week. Your support helps every student at Clyde Hill Elementary.

In preparation for Young Scientist Week (YSW), we are conducting a t-shirt design contest, selling science project boards and t-shirts, sponsoring a Family Training Night, and providing after-school assistance.

All Clyde Hill students are encouraged to participate in YSW’s Science Fair by submitting a science project. Students can work alone or with a Clyde Hill friend. Creating a project using the scientific method helps a child develop critical thinking skills and piques the child’s interest about scientific subjects. Using an inquiry-based process, students will make interesting discoveries and improve reading, writing, researching, drawing, and higher level thinking skills at the same time! The inquiry process using the scientific method is one of the main Essential Academic Learning Skills in the BSD science curriculum. Plus, kids are excited to see their projects displayed at the Science Fair! All students who register and complete a project for Young Scientist Week will receive a very cool science medal! This project qualifies in the PTSA’s Academic Challenge.

In order to communicate efficiently and effectively with all parents, we are asking for a Young Scientist Week liason from each classroom. At this time, we have representation from: Beye, Boyer, Meyers, Stout, Bishop, Cowling, Myrick, and Holmes. YSW liaisons from each class will recruit a parent to give a 20-30 minute science-related (i.e. career, hobby) presentation. In addition, we hope that this person can help fill other volunteer needs as noted in italics. Please mark your calendars:
